Target Areas

Zimbabwe  – Zaka, Gutu and Masvingo districts in Masvingo Province

The target area of this project (Zaka district, Masvingo Province, in  Zimbabwe), is typical of the food insecure ‘communal areas’ where chronic seed security problems persist. Community consultations conducted during the SAMP Inception Phase found that approximately 90% of households can be termed “seed insecure”, that is, they are not able to obtain (through growing or purchase) quality seed when they need it and at a price they can afford. Instead, they have over the years relied on either seed ‘relief’ programmes or ‘retained’ seed from their own production which is often sub-standard. SDC has been working on multi-sectoral projects for a number of years in Zaka

Swaziland – Nwgempisi, Hho Hho and Lower Isutut RDA

These RDA's was selected as it has a favourable climates for seed production, isolated areas with alluvial soils and irrigation. Rainfall is approximately 800-1000 mm.

Lesotho – Leribe, Berea Maseru and Mafateng districts

SAMP building on an existing Community Seed Production project which was being implemented by FAO with funding from the European Union. These districts are also favourable for seed production as they lie in the ‘Foothills’ area.
